Guest Teachers/Substitutes

Welcome!

Welcome to the Bozeman Public Schools! Our substitute teachers provide a very important service to the students of the Bozeman School District, and we are pleased to have you as members of our educational team. We know that you will make every effort to make a very real and significant contribution to our instructional program in carrying on the work of those teachers who find it necessary to be absent.

The links contained on this page are provided to explain our general procedures and answer many of the questions you may have regarding substitute teaching in our District. School secretaries will provide you with more detailed information regarding various duties and individual policies and procedures when you report for your assignment.

Upon arrival for your substitute teaching assignment, please introduce yourself to the building secretary when you enter the school. Ask for any pertinent information and ask to be introduced to the teachers in the rooms on either side of you. If you need any additional assistance throughout the day, these teachers can help you or you may telephone the office.

You should receive a detailed lesson plan(s) as well as the class schedule, class/building procedures and emergency procedures.

We appreciate your contributions to the education of Bozeman students. We feel certain that you will find our staff very willing to give you the assistance and cooperation you need.

Standard Work Day

A full day is normally defined as working 7 1/2 hours from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., excluding lunch. A half-day is defined as 3 3/4 hours. Arriving approximately 1/2 hour before students at the beginning of the instructional day will allow substitute teachers to familiarize themselves with lesson plans and other duties, assignment, and events for the day. It is expected that substitutes will complete notes for the returning teacher, straighten the room, and attend to any problems or concerns which may have arisen through the day before leaving. Substitutes who have only 1-2 periods to teach in a half-day assignment are expected to work 3 3/4 hours and to ask the principal or school secretary for tasks that will benefit the school, such as assisting in the library, supervising hallways, cafeterias or playground areas.

Individuals unable to fulfill the full day will not be paid for a full day. If you must leave prior to 4:00 p.m. or are called out after the start of the school day, you will be paid at the hourly rate of $20.00.

Please check in with the building secretary before leaving that building during any time of the day. Your services may be needed in another classroom for that period of time.

Compensation

Payment is based upon signed time sheets maintained at each school site. Actual number of hours must be entered on the time sheet for approval. The substitute teacher and the school principal must sign time sheets. Payment is on the 14th day of the month following the submission of the time sheet. Substitute teachers must verify time worked at the end of each day with the school secretary.

Qualifications

Preference will be given in most situations to those applicants who hold teaching certificates and to those who have completed teacher preparation courses. A bachelor's degree is highly preferred. Other preferred requirements include proven effectiveness in working with school-age children in an instructional setting and dependability. Long-term substitutes (those who substitute more than 35 consecutive days in the same position) must have a valid Montana teacher certificate.

State law requires the District to contract a certified teacher to replace a teacher who has been absent for 35 consecutive days. Certified substitutes who are selected to teach during such an absence will be contracted beginning the 36th day of the teacher's absence. The substitute must be currently certified in the area of the teaching assignment. The contract will be issued at the appropriate level of education and experience in accordance with district hiring procedures. The district will not pay such substitutes retroactively.

Instructions and Forms

You should receive the instructions form contained below, when you report to our elementary schools as a substitute teacher. Middle and High School substitutes will receive detailed lesson and classroom plans. We hope the information will answer most of your questions related to your assignment. If you have further questions when you arrive at the school, please ask the school secretary or building administrator.

After your substitute duties are finished, please take time to fill out the Substitute Feedback Form and leave it with the school secretary.
